Is ammo THIS expensive now?

I just picked up the latest American Rifleman magazine at the public library and noticed some prices that seem out of the ordinary. In the January, 2009 issue on page 11, there's a Cheaper Than Dirt advertisement that has prices that are very high:

American Eagle 9mm 50 rounds-----$18.39

DRT 9mm 50 rounds-----$49.97

Hornady .40 20 rounds--------$19.59

They don't seem "Cheaper than dirt" to me! Is this typical of prices today? I saw Remington UMC hollowpoints in 9mm for $19.97 for 100 rounds. That seems more like it.

Ammo is volatile right now. Deals can be had and losses can be had.
Decide what you need and find the best price. The overwhelming sentiment being that it is as cheap as it is going to be right now as taxes are very much expected under our upcoming administration (US).
Let's just say that I have rounded out my current calibers and am actually procuring calibers that I do not own firearms for... yet.

I purchase most of my ammo needs at Maomart.

Yes I know its an evil company and 99% of the crap they sell comes from china the ammo I purchase is mostly made in USA.

And expect to see tax increases on ammo in the area of 500%.

There must be some gold in that dirt, cuz cheaper then dirt, ain't so cheap.
You guys better get on that "Glazer Brass" at Walmart. $8.95 for 115g 9mm
$12 for .40 and I think it was $15 for .45
Hard to beat!

Those are good prices. Ammo is a lot like precious metals right now...if you can find a low price, it will be out of stock. If you find what you want in stock, buy it immediately.

Ammo is only going to increase in cost, since Obamanation is going to tax and ban a wide-variety of Second Amendment rights.

CTD's ammo is priced far higher than most other sellers right now, so I wouldn't call them the norm. I'm still getting some (somewhat) decent deals at local gun shops. Last week I picked up some Blazer FMJ 9mm for $8.95/50 rounds. There are some calibers (Swiss 7.5x55 comes to mind) that haven't gone up in price in quite a while too. That being said, get what you can while you can.

Yep, I've been hitting Maomarts myself. Tip - try Maomarts in tiny towns for better Ammo selection. I tried the Wal-Mart in a small town nearby and was amazed that they had 7.62x39mm in Remington & Winchester !!!

Also, had plenty of 5.56 Winchester at $8.50 per box of 20.
